Firmware vs Prod Keys — Do You Need Both?

Last updated

These two files are routinely confused because a missing one looks like a missing other. They solve different problems, and the symptom tells you which is absent.

What each one does

 Prod keys Firmware
Job Decrypts game data Provides the system software a game expects
Failure before loading Yes – nothing opens without it No – games decrypt but may refuse to start
Typical error Keys not found, failed to decrypt Game requires a system update
Install location Keys or system folder Emulator’s firmware install screen
Changes Per key generation Per firmware generation

Decide in two questions

 1. Does any game load at all? If none do, the problem is keys. See keys not found.
 2. Do older games load but newer ones stop with a version message? That is firmware. See firmware too low.

Why you usually need both

A current setup has both installed and both on the same generation — keys so the game can be read, firmware so it is permitted to run. Set them up together using the install guide and the firmware page.

Frequently asked questions

Can I skip firmware if I have keys?

Only for games that do not perform a version check. Most current titles do, and will refuse to start.
Which file causes a black screen?

Keys usually: without them nothing decrypts and the emulator exits. A firmware problem usually produces a message instead of a black screen.
